New restaurants feature Chinese, French food

SPRINGFIELD ? Two new eateries with an international orientation have opened in Springfield.

Rice Village is serving Chinese food in the food court area at Gateway Mall. A little more than three miles away, two women of Scottish heritage have opened French Kiss Cafe, which combines French and Scottish flavors with American food.

Rice Village offers about a dozen entrees, including Mandarin chicken, orange chicken and mango pork. Prices start at $4.99 for a one-item plate and go up to $7.59 for a four-item plate. A children?s plate is available for $3.99.

The restaurant is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. It can be reached at 541-744-7058.

French Kiss Cafe held its grand opening at 145 Pioneer Parkway on Thursday, after a soft opening late last year. Owners Pat Walters and her aunt, Mary Stewart, both have a background in the food business. Stewart previously operated a doughnut shop as well as sandwich shops in California before moving here a little more than a year ago, Walters said. Her own background is in event planning and catering, including Thurston High School?s Ye Olde Christmas Feaste, which she has done for the past two decades.

The cafe, which seats about 18 people, is located inside The Mercantile on the Parkway vintage and collectibles shop. ?We had been at different cafes inside antique malls,? Walters said. ?We both like antiquing, and having a cafe there when you go antiquing.?

They were fortunate, she said, in that the Pioneer Parkway space was already equipped with commercial sinks and a stove with a hood.

?What we did was cosmetic. We painted, put new flooring in, decorated.?... We went to the Habitat store and bought a display case for bakery goods and refurbished that,? Walters said.

The menu goes from soup to homemade desserts, such as scones and strudel bars, with crepes, sandwiches, panini and wraps in between. ?And my aunt makes rustic Scottish bread,? Walters added. Prices start at $3.50 for a cup of soup and go up to $8.50 for most sandwiches ($9 for the Reuben), she said.

The women also offer a five-course high tea ? although Walters notes that the correct term is actually afternoon tea ? by reservation only, for $25 per person. It is, Walters indicated, fairly lavish ? ?By the time most women are done with the sandwiches and savories, they?re asking for a to-go bag.?

The cafe can be reached at 541-747-8770.
