All Blacks lose McCaw, Jane for Wallaby Test
Wellington (AFP) - The All Blacks suffered a double blow on the eve of Saturday's Test against the Wallabies with captain Richie McCaw and wing Cory Jane ruled out after picking up injuries in training.
"Richie McCaw has been ruled out of Test with tight calf. Cory Jane also out w mild hamstring strain," the All Blacks posted on their Twitter account.
A team spokesman would not comment on the posting but said injury updates would be made at the captain's run later Friday. It is understood the injuries flared up during training on Thursday.
Sam Cane replaces McCaw on the openside flank and Charles Piutau will start on the right wing, with Steven Luatua added to the replacements, the All Blacks' official Twitter account said.
In recent weeks McCaw has been troubled by a knee injury suffered against Argentina early in the rugby championship.
Jane had been rushed back after only two appearances in New Zealand's provincial competition since sitting out most of the year with knee ligaments damaged in pre-season training.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — New England linebacker Jerod Mayo will miss the rest of the season with the latest serious injury to a Patriots defensive star.
The team placed the two-time Pro Bowl player on injured reserve Wednesday, three days after he was hurt in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 30-27 win over the New Orleans Saints.
Mayo joins defensive tackle Vince Wilfork on IR. Wilfork tore his right Achilles tendon Sept. 29 in a 30-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons. He and Mayo are defensive co-captains.
After tackling Darren Sproles on Sunday, Mayo got up and reached for the upper right area of his chest. Mayo's agent, Mitch Frankel, did not respond to a request for comment on a report that Mayo had undergone surgery for a torn chest muscle. Rookie Jamie Collins, the Patriots' first-round draft choice, and Dane Fletcher are expected to fill in for Mayo, who has missed just five regular-season games.
Mayo is the NFL's leading tackler since 2010 with 546 and has led the Patriots in tackles in each of his five seasons.
"I think I've been on record many times talking about Jerod," coach Bill Belichick said. "He does a lot for us on the field, off the field. But we're just going to have to move on."
The Patriots also announced that they re-signed defensive tackle Andre Neblett and signed cornerback Travis Howard to the practice squad.

MSNBC hires Mia Farrow's son Ronan for show
NEW YORK (AP) — A book deal, tabloid attention and now a new television show — it's a busy time in the public eye for 25-year-old Ronan Farrow.
MSNBC announced Wednesday that it had hired Mia Farrow's son, a human rights activist and former Rhodes scholar, to host a weekday program on the left-leaning cable television network starting sometime next year.
MSNBC chief executive Phil Griffin said that Farrow's show "will be a game changer for MSNBC, representing a fresh approach to how we deliver news." He didn't specify what he meant. MSNBC has struggled in the ratings in the post-election period.
Farrow, in a statement, said he was excited to shake up people's expectations for cable news.
"This is a new generation of news show for a new, more engaged generation of viewers," he said. "It's a show about why the news matters to you — and what you can do to be part of the story."
Farrow, a Yale Law School graduate, founded the U.S. State Department's Office of Global Youth Issues during President Barack Obama's first term. On Tuesday, the Penguin Press announced that it would publish a book by Farrow, "Pandora's Box: How American Military Aid Creates America's Enemies," in 2015.
Farrow also made headlines recently when his mother suggested in an interview with Vanity Fair that he could be the son of Frank Sinatra, not Woody Allen, as was long assumed. Allen has called the claim absurd.

Hans Zimmer to Discuss 'Rush' at Billboard-THR Film & TV Music Conference

Rush is the latest film score from Zimmer, whose music has graced more than 100 movies that have grossed more than $22 billion at the worldwide box office. Honored with the ASCAP Henry Mancini Award for Lifetime Achievement, he has also received an Academy Award, two Golden Globes and four Grammy Awards.
Among his films are The Lion King, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Gore Verbinski’s Pirates of the Caribbean series; Christopher Nolan’s three Batman films, Howard’s The Da Vinci Code and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave.

Joining Zimmer will be Asher, the film’s music consultant and producer, and Balfe, a composer. Besides Rush, Asher produced the music for Zimmer’s scores to Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Sherlock Holmes 2, Madagascar 3 and Man of Steel.
Asher, one half of the pop duo Peter & Gordon, became head of A&R for Apple Records in 1968 and in 1971, founded Peter Asher Management, representing James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Randy Newman and others.
A producer as well, in 1977 and 1989 he received the Grammy for Producer of the Year and most recently produced Steve Martin and Edie Brickell’s album Love Has Come For You. He also just completed a project for Elton John with current artists singing songs from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the album.

Balfe, a composer from Inverness, Scotland, most recently scored Shane Salerno’s feature documentary Salinger. Known for his work on video games, his credits include Assassin’s Creed III and Beyond: Two Souls.
This year's Film and TV Music Conference's programming highlights include: Singer-songwriter and composer Randy Newman, who will deliver a keynote Q&A conducted by his son, Amos Newman, the head of Music for Visual Media at William Morris Endeavor; T Bone Burnett, who will be honored with the Maestro Award for his seminal work in film and television music, most recently as executive music producer of the Coen Brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis; a keynote Q&A by music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas, whose credits include Scandal, Carrie Diaries, and the upcoming film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire; director David O. Decision day in NJ's accelerated US Senate race
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey's abbreviated U.S. Senate race went to the populace Wednesday with candidates characterizing the contest as a referendum on the partisan gridlock that has paralyzed Washington in recent weeks.
Democrat Cory Booker and Republican Steve Lonegan each cast a ballot early in the morning in the special election to fill the seat of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who died in June.
The election is the first since the partial federal government shutdown began more than two weeks ago. It came the same day Senate leaders announced a deal had been struck to reopen the government and avert a Treasury default.
"This is the only election in America right now where we will get a chance to make a statement about what is going on in Washington," Booker said after voting in downtown Newark. "This is a chance for us to send a message about the shutdown, about the gridlock, about all those forces that my opponent represents — the tea party — that says we shouldn't compromise, we shouldn't work together."
Booker, the high-profile mayor of New Jersey's largest city, had circulated a petition to end the shutdown and accused Congress of failing voters by not finding a way to work together.
Lonegan supported the shutdown, arguing the Affordable Care Act should be delayed a year and objecting to the concept of government-directed health insurance. In recent days, he has accused Booker of not even living in Newark.
After voting in Bogota, the city he led as mayor for three terms, Lonegan said he has been able to unite Republicans of all stripes.
"We've unified and I'm proud of that," he said. "The entire Republican party, from the tea party to the moderate wing to pro-life and not so pro-life. Everybody who cares about individual liberty."
In the shore town of Point Pleasant, nurse Mary Martin said she voted for Lonegan, a decision that wasn't influenced by the government shutdown.
"I'm a longtime Republican and I just think with the way we're headed, we need more conservative people in there," she said.
Polls closed at 8 p.m.
The two-month campaign played out under a compressed schedule and was the subject of controversy even before the two candidates were chosen.
Republican Gov. Chris Christie appointed a GOP caretaker and ordered the election held Oct. 16, the soonest date the law allowed following an unprecedented August primary.
Critics accused the governor of keeping the race off the Nov. 5 ballot, when he is up for re-election, to make it easier for him to win big as a Republican in a Democratic-leaning state and aid his potential national ambitions. During his first debate, he refused to rule out a run for president in 2016.
Public opinion polls showed Booker, 44, the second-term mayor of Newark, with a double-digit-percentage advantage heading into the election, where he hoped to secure a seat as the second African-American in the Senate along with Republican Tim Scott of South Carolina.
Booker on Wednesday called the opportunity to serve as senator "one of the greatest privileges any Jersey boy could have."
Marcy Phillips, a 30-year resident of Newark, covered her car in Booker signs and was driving around the city Wednesday urging people to vote.
"He's the best out of the candidates right now, and he's the one we need," she said. "As the mayor of Newark, he did his best and right now the whole city has changed."
Lonegan, 57, the former state director of Americans for Prosperity, a group advocating limited government that was founded by the billionaire Koch brothers, ran an aggressive, in-your-face campaign.
"We want a leader, not a tweeter," he said at one point, referring to Booker's prolific use of Twitter, where he has 1.4 million followers.
Both candidates drew on some big names for support — Oprah Winfrey helped raise funds for Booker, while the nation's largest tea party political action committee brought former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in to campaign for the GOP nominee.
The campaign took odd twists and turns for both candidates.
Booker was forced off-message to explain G-rated correspondence with a stripper he met while filming a social media documentary. Lonegan was forced to dump a longtime strategist after a lengthy, profanity-laced interview with a political website in which he claimed Booker's banter with the stripper "was like what a gay guy would say."
While in Newark, Booker has worked with Christie on common education goals, such as ending lifetime teacher tenure and increasing the number of charter schools. Newark schools remain under state control.
Lonegan repeatedly knocked Booker for the city's high crime rate and unemployment. At one point in the campaign, Booker announced a new crime-fighting strategy to cope with a string of 10 homicides in 10 days.
Lonegan said that as a mayor, he also has reached across the aisle in working with a Democratic borough council.
But Booker painted him as a tea party extremist, one who would — if sent to Washington — make the capital's gridlock worse.

For Dusty Rhodes, Cody & Goldust’s win a proud and emotional moment
Just two weeks ago, Cody Rhodes, Goldust and their WWE Hall of Fame father, Dusty Rhodes, were at risk of never working in WWE again. Now, days removed from the brothers Rhodes’ win over The Shield’s Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns on Raw, The American Dream not only remains gainfully employed by WWE, but he is also the proud father of the new WWE Tag Team Champions.
Like the rest of the WWE Universe, the Rhodes family patriarch was transfixed by Raw’s main event Monday, glued to the emotionally charged battle that was unfolding on live TV, he told WWE.com.
“It was one of the best matches on WWE television in years,” the WWE Hall of Famer said. “Those fans had been there for almost four hours. To hear them go from zero to reach a climax and chant ‘This is awesome!’ was a memorable moment. I tried to teach Cody that memorable moments are special and you have to make them whenever you can.”

His sons’ show-stealing championship win is not the only reason The American Dream is beaming with fatherly pride. Monday night’s cathartic main event also provided a sense of retribution against “The Authority,” which has targeted the Rhodes clan in recent weeks.
“The emotion came from my sons fighting through everything that Triple H has put in their way,” he said, later adding that he “loved seeing the frustration on Triple H's face when his plan backfired.”
Perhaps most rewarding to the three-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, however, is that he now gets to watch his sons fight side-by-side. Although Cody has won tag team championship gold with multiple partners during his WWE career, his current tandem allows him to pick the brain of his well-traveled big brother, a 25-year veteran who is undergoing an unexpected career renaissance.
“On Team Rhodes, Cody is the young prince and Dustin is the iconic figure,” their father explained. “Dustin is better than he's ever been. Cody now gets to mirror and travel with Dustin. To get an education from a great in-ring performer who is also a cult character is rare. To have that teacher happen to be your brother is an amazing learning process.”
The American Dream observed another benefit of his sons’ partnership, even beyond the added insight that Cody is able glean from Goldust.
“They laugh with each other and are having fun,” he said. “Cody told me today that he's having fun and that's the first time he has said that. He's a workaholic and has always worried about everything from a business perspective.
“For the great ones, nothing else matters when they walk through the curtain but entertaining the fans,” he elaborated. “That's important for entertainers. Both Cody and Dustin are at that point now, together.”
