Updated Product Review: Nexus 7 Tablet

I really should title this one, part TWO of my original review of my new Nexus 7 Tablet (can I get a shout out to Staples for having an excellent electronics department?), as now that I've had time to play with use it. Now that I've gotten alot of use of it, I wanted to share some of the really cool things that I LOVE about it.?

First, it has really make me MISS my Android phone intently! For those who have not used Android, it is much more intuitive and user friendly of a platform than iphone. Everything has been simplified to one step, versus the 3-4 of iphone. Ever try setting a song from your computer as a ringtone on iphone? 2 programs and 5 steps, versus move from computer to phone and set in Android. ?The Nexus 7 has the new Android Jellybean and it is uber fast, responsive and beyond easy to use!?

I'm going to show you some screen shots (which you can take by merely depressing the power and down volume buttons at the same time, the device clicks and see the small screenshot to make sure you captured what you wanted to) and show you what wonders are on this phone!

Starting when you turn on the phone, you can set a password lock or a facial recognition lock. I love the facial lock, but with other family members using the tablet, I opted for a password. It only takes a couple of seconds to enter, but it keeps strangers from accessing my data, when I'm in a public place!

You can set your screensaver to how ever you want it, including your favorite picture. I've kept the recent entertainment (Google books, music and magazines) tab as a front cover, for now. After I really involved in the tablet, I will probably change them. When you slide the screen left, you get the second home screen (see above picture), with the Google Play recommendations. You can click to like the suggestion, or to remove it, and a new one will come up. Google takes this info and the next time you log on, offers more content for you.

Or you can open the Google Now cards, by simply swiping up from the bottom bar?and get your local weather, traffic, sports news, public transit and flight info (picture above)! Yup, all at one swipe! Perfect for getting what you need to know BEFORE you get dressed for the day! This is perfect for those who are always on the go for business!?



When you hit the app button, all your apps are shown (picture above). This makes it really quick to go to one of your apps, say Gallery (photos) or Game (say Mah-Jong), without having to put them on one of your home screens. They are all alphabetical, so it's quick to find them!


But say you downloaded an app, and want to open it, but you just got a call about an email you need to open? Up on the top bar on the left, you'll see small icons pop up as email comes in, you download an app, update an app, or publish say a post to Blogger (see picture above) . All you have to do to open one of them is to swipe the bar down, find the item you want and click it. Yup it's THAT simple to switch from an app to your email. Want to go back to the app? Repeat with the bar, OR you can go to the previous apps bottom 'go' button. And there are all your recent apps (picture below) ! You can scroll up and down and find the one you want. And BAMM, you can be back where you were before you went to check the email! Easy peasy!?



The Google voice search has been really amazing. It is a super time saver and I've found myself using the voice type command ALOT. Say you have a blog post idea, but are at the school waiting on your child's basketball practice to end. if you've got wifi access, all you have to do is start a post, click on the microphone on the keyboard, and start talking. Your text will appear, you can save the post, and later you can edit it at home and publish it. AND you can use the Google voice wherever you use a keyboard, including email and Facebook!?


While having no removable SD card gives the tablet some limitations. By buying a USB OTG (On The Go) cable (on the left, which allows you to connect ANY usb device to your tablet), and Stickmount and ES File Explorer apps (both free in Google Play store), you can transfer files back and forth from the tablet and any USB memory device, like a thumb drive or back up hard drive.?

You can also bluetooth files VERY easily. I've transferred numerous files back and forth to my laptop, with no problem! If you have a bluetooth printer, you can also send files to it, when you go to share. This has worked wonderfully so far! I also have a Brother computer label printer, and the tablet works great with it, and the Brother app, so I can print out labels in any room, and not be tied down to the computer! Can I get a woo-hoo?

The other items you will need for your tablet will be a screen cleaner or film cover, and a carrying case. Though I have found I'm still debating on type of case, but I definitely want something I can put into my purse easily. Regular headphones work great with the tablet as well, for covert listening, but I highly recommend stereo Android ones, for better sound.

Additionally, if you will be working off-line on business documents, then you need to download one of the office apps, so you have word type document makers, as the Google Drive is great, but only accessible with wi-fi. It really comes down to doing a little research to see what apps you should download for YOUR needs. And naturally there is some trial and error, to see which ones you prefer. Luckily most of them have free trials, or free apps, to save you money! When you purchase the Nexus 7, you do get $25 credit to the Google Play store, as soon as you set up your account! That was pretty cool to me, as it enabled me to download a genealogy app that work with my Legacy Family Tree program on my home computer. It is so easy now to take the tablet with me, and if a genealogy questions comes up, I can pull up my ENTIRE genealogy file!?

Seriously, I use my tablet around the house ALL the time- it is easier than lugging around the laptop, and easier to read than the smart phone. The iphone has been relegated to pretty much a phone and alarm clock. I only use the laptop for loading pictures into blog posts, or if I have to cut and paste alot of info (the tablet and I haven't quite worked out the clipboard to my satisfaction- it works, but I can never get clipboard to clear when I need it to, I know it's operator error, just need to figure out the right app to help!?

Is the West inching toward military intervention in Syria?

More countries are talking about implementing at least a partial no-fly zone in Syria and taking other steps to address the needs of the swelling numbers of refugees.

The likelihood of action that is closer to the role the West took last year in Libya seems to be growing, as more countries talk about implementing a no-fly zone and steps to address the needs of the swelling numbers of refugees in the Syrian conflict.

In France, where the right is hounding President Fran?ois Hollande for ?abandoning? Syrians battling the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, the government is now raising the possibility of establishing at least a partial no-fly zone. Creation of such a zone, first suggested by US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton during a recent visit to Turkey, would help protect civilians from government bombardment and carve out a ?safe haven? from which anti-Assad forces could operate.

France and Germany are calling for more coordinated action to address the needs of what are now estimated to be more than 200,000 refugees in the conflict. And British Prime Minister David Cameron is echoing President Obama, who earlier this week warned Mr. Assad that any use or even movement of the country?s stockpile of chemical weapons would be met by US military intervention.

Up to now Western powers, including the United States, have insisted that Syria is different from Libya, that the risks of a devastating regional war set off by outside intervention are much greater, and that the need is to end Syria?s violence, not add to it. But with violence reaching horrendous new proportions, and with the fighting sending thousands of additional refuges every week into Turkey, Jordan, and an increasingly tense Lebanon, pressure to do something different is mounting.

On Thursday French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a televised interview that it might be time to establish a no-fly zone over the area between the besieged northern city of Aleppo and the Turkish border.

?The idea of a no-fly zone over a particular part of Syria, as suggested by Hillary Clinton, should be examined,? he said.

The uptick in discussion of possible Western intervention in Syria comes as United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met for the first time Friday with the new UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi. The foreign Algerian foreign minister took the post after former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan resigned in protest of what he said was the international community?s ?disunity? on Syria.

Mr. Brahimi, whose new job officially starts Sept. 1, has said his mission of bringing peace to Syria can succeed only if the international community manages to speak ?with a unified voice.?

Mr. Annan had offered a six-point peace plan for Syria that was rubber-stamped by the UN Security Council but never backed in its details. Russia and China have vetoed three Security Council resolutions on Syria, most recently last month, prompting Western powers to say they would have to turn to other institutions and countries to address the Syrian conflict.

Still, the complications of establishing and maintaining a no-fly zone in Syria are prompting caution on the part of some US officials. This week Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said that while such a step is under study, it is ?not on the front burner.?

Military experts say setting up even a partial no-fly zone would require sustained and risky intervention, and it would inevitably result in casualties that the Assad regime and its supporters would trumpet to Muslim countries as more Western attacks on Muslims.

Others point to how NATO?s aerial campaign in Libya extended well beyond what NATO leaders originally predicted would be necessary. Another concern is whether Western intervention would prompt Assad to unleash his chemical weapons, as he has threatened.

But with reports suggesting hundreds of civilians are dying every day in the violence, and with Syrian refugees pouring over borders and adding to the region?s already worrisome instability, pressure to take action is likely to continue climbing.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) this week revised upward to 200,000 the number of Syrians who have fled to neighboring countries and require assistance. Turkey has already registered more than 75,000 Syrian refugees, while others who have fled to Lebanon are getting caught up in spillover violence there.

As a result, more refuges seem to be crossing into Jordan ? sometimes a thousand or more in a night, the UNHCR reports.

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., Aug.?24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The August new-vehicle selling rate is expected to be the highest monthly rate in more than four and one-half years, according to a monthly sales forecast developed by J.D. Power and Associates' Power Information Network? (PIN) and LMC Automotive.

Retail Light-Vehicle Sales
August new-vehicle retail sales are projected to come in at 1,066,200 units, which represents a seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) of 12.3 million units. The year-over-year growth rate in retail sales continues a double-digit trend for a fourth consecutive month. Retail transactions are the most accurate measurement of true underlying consumer demand for new vehicles.

"August continues this summer's trend of healthy growth in retail sales as dealers work to?sell down inventory in time to make room for 2013 models," said John Humphrey, senior vice president of global automotive operations at J.D. Power and Associates. "To date, automakers have been diligent in better balancing production with demand, which has been critical to the improved financial performance for many brands. Going forward, this discipline will be tested as demand looks to cool somewhat through the balance of the year."

While incentives are down slightly in August, compared with July ($106 less per vehicle, on average), there are deals driving some activity as the model-year sell down takes hold. Consumers are pushing aside the economic risks, as the need to replace their current vehicle is matched by availability of both inventory and credit.

Total Light-Vehicle Sales
Total light-vehicle sales remain stable, with the volume in August expected to come in at 1,285,300 units, a 16 percent increase from August 2011. Fleet represents only 17 percent of total light-vehicle sales, which is lower than the 21 percent year-to-date average.

Sales Outlook
LMC Automotive recently revised the outlook for total light-vehicle sales in the United States downward to 14.3 million units from 14.5 million units, with retail sales at 11.4 million units, down from 11.5 million units. Weaker economic growth and concerns with the European crisis are the driving factors for slower growth during the second half of the year. The industry is still expected to achieve the 15-million-unit level in 2013, but the outlook has been tempered from a projected 15.2 million units, as the risks in 2012 spill over into next year.

"The strength in August light-vehicle sales takes some of the pressure off expectations for the balance of the year, but a high level of risk lingers," said Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting at LMC Automotive. "We expect the current seesawing in auto sales to continue for the foreseeable future, but the overall picture in 2012 remains positive."

North American Production
North American light-vehicle production volume has increased by 23 percent through the first seven months this year, compared with the same period in 2011. The increase of nearly 1.7 million additional vehicles highlights the industry's recovery from the challenging production environment in 2011.

Production for Honda and Toyota in the first seven months of 2012 are up 79 percent and 65 percent, respectively, as recovery by both manufacturers takes hold. U.S. manufacturing growth is outpacing the rest of the North American region, with a 27 percent year-to-date increase as newer capacity drives the growth. Production in Mexico has increased 14 percent, with further growth expected as new key models ramp up. Canadian manufacturing has increased 20 percent year to date, but the level of future volume is at risk, as the domestic manufacturers and CAW begin labor negotiations.

Vehicle inventory in early August declined slightly to a 54-day supply, compared with 58 days in July. Car inventory remains at a below-normal level with a 47-day supply, down from 49 days in July. Truck inventory is at normal levels with a 61-day supply, down from 67 days in July.

"With the robust production activity outpacing the increases in demand, North American volume is approaching the 15.0-million-unit level for the first time since 2007," said Schuster. "However, given that inventory has normalized and growth in demand is expected to slow, LMC Automotive is holding the forecast for 2012 at 14.9 million units for the year."
