creative ideas - How To Be Inspired To Generate Extraordinary Ideas

How do we generate ideas? The means is classified into two; the ordinary process and the extraordinary process. If you are going to get new ideas, it is essential that you eradicate negative thinking from your mind. You will not be able to produce creative ideas if you think negatively. All of the body functions, including the brain, are controlled by words.

Scientists discovered several years ago that the nerves at the speech centre of the brain control the nerves that control all the other parts of the body. So when a word is spoken, the whole body responds accordingly. Negative speech and negative thinking are major reasons why some people will not receive the ideas that will launch them into breakthrough because their mind cannot nurture creative ideas.

Sometimes we do not attempt great things for lack of money. If only we knew that it is the quality of ideas that flow through out mind that matters. Ideas magnetize resources. We must never say that things are impossible. The great French General, Napoleon once declared "The word ?impossible' can only be found in the dictionary of fools".

In reality, nothing is impossible, impossibility only exists In the mind. I will recommend the following steps for receiving ideas. Natural Process: Identify a need: Find a need and fill it. The problem with the average person is that our inner eyes are closed. One man's problem is another man's opportunity. Some people only see the problem and never see the opportunity. For example, people need to wear clothes, make the clothes.

We love to sing and dance; that creates the need for music and musical instrument. We need to get ideas to meet the variety of needs around us. We have need with respect to housing, transportation, communication, recreation, feeding, information and many more.

Simplify an existing process or products: For example, cables have been used for telephone but now we do not need cables. Someone got the idea for a wireless phone system. Wires have been used to send signals from security cameras to the monitors, but now there are wireless cameras. Create a need: Before, man used only water to entertain visitors but now we use soft drinks. Exposure: Reading, traveling and asking questions helps to arrange and re-arrange thoughts in our mind.

Supernatural Process: All the methods in the ordinary process use the five senses. But with respect to extraordinary process, we receive information from the invisible realm. The greatest ideas that man will ever know are the ones coming from the invisible realm.

We must cultivate our minds and faculties to be able to receive from that realm. Some have called it the sixth sense. Some called it intuition. In the church it is called the voice of the spirit. It is the ability to receive what the five senses cannot know.

One man?s problem is another man?s opportunity. Find the need and fill it. Read books, travel and ask questions. Take a bold step and click on this link: http://6da6e9fllw3e6o7ryewso0fcvh.hop.clickbank.net/?tid=VH5ZXTS6 and you?ll find one of such extraordinary and timeless books ever known to man

NYC examines sanitation records in search for Patz remains

By NBCNewYork.com

Investigators are trying to determine whether they can track the remains of 6-year-old Etan Patz now that a suspect has made claims about where he tossed the boy's body in Manhattan in 1979.

Police contacted sanitation officials last week, when Pedro Hernandez was arrested, asking if the department has records dating back that far showing which trucks might have collected trash from buildings in the area, the Department of Sanitation told NBC 4 New York on Monday.?Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Hernandez has told police that he put the boy's body in a trash bag and left it in an alley a few blocks from the SoHo bodega where he claimed to have strangled the boy.

It was the first day?Patz had ever been allowed to walk alone to the school bus stop. He never made it, and his disappearance mystified the city for decades.

Sanitation spokesman?Vito Turso told NBC?4 New York that the city does have handwritten log books about which trucks picked up trash in certain locations, and records of where those loads were dumped.

Turso said if city trucks collected the bag with Patz's body, it could have been taken by barge to the former Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island. It also could have been transported to an incinerator that used to burn trash near Gansevoort Street on the west side of Manhattan.

Turso said there was also the possibility that the bag would have been collected as commercial refuse by a private hauler. In that case, NYPD would have to identify the store and trace the hauler. That trash, Turso said, could have gone to Fresh Kills, the former Fountain?Avenue landfill in Brooklyn, or some other private landfill.

"We await further word from?NYPD,"?Turso said.

The Department of Sanitation also has records that show where in its landfills trash was dumped, by date and location. That could help narrow a potential dig for remains, if police decided to pursue one.

Hernandez, 51, was a stock clerk at the bodega at the time the boy disappeared. Police said he told them he lured Patz to the store with the promise of a soda, and then killed him in the basement.

He was charged Friday with second-degree murder and has not entered a plea.

His lawyer, Harvey Fishbein, told the court that Hernandez is a schizophrenic and has had both auditory and visual hallucinations. He has requested a hearing to determine his client's mental fitness.

Typical CEO made $9.6 million last year

The head of a typical public company made $9.6 million in 2011, according to an analysis by The Associated Press. The typical American worker would have to labor for 244 years to make what the typical boss of a big public company makes in one.

The head of a typical public company made $9.6 million in 2011, according to an analysis by The Associated Press using data from Equilar, an executive pay research firm.

That was up more than 6 percent from the previous year, and is the second year in a row of increases. The figure is also the highest since the AP began tracking executive compensation in 2006.

Companies trimmed cash bonuses but handed out more in stock awards. For shareholder activists who have long decried CEO pay as exorbitant, that was a victory of sorts.

That's because the stock awards are being tied more often to company performance. In those instances, CEOs can't cash in the shares right away: They have to meet goals first, like boosting profit to a certain level.

The idea is to motivate CEOs to make sure a company does well and to tie their fortunes to the company's for the long term. For too long, activists say, CEOs have been richly rewarded no matter how a company has fared ? "pay for pulse," as some critics call it.

To be sure, the companies' motives are pragmatic. The corporate world is under a brighter, more uncomfortable spotlight than it was a few years ago, before the financial crisis struck in the fall of 2008.

Last year, a law gave shareholders the right to vote on whether they approve of the CEO's pay. The vote is nonbinding, but companies are keen to avoid an embarrassing "no."

"I think the boards were more easily shamed than we thought they were," says Stephen Davis, a shareholder expert at Yale University, referring to boards of directors, which set executive pay.

In the past year, he says, "Shareholders found their voice."

The typical CEO got stock awards worth $3.6 million in 2011, up 11 percent from the year before. Cash bonuses fell about 7 percent, to $2 million.

The value of stock options, as determined by the company, climbed 6 percent to a median $1.7 million. Options usually give the CEO the right to buy shares in the future at the price they're trading at when the options are granted, so they're worth something only if the shares go up.

Profit at companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index rose 16 percent last year, remarkable in an economy that grew more slowly than expected.

CEOs managed to sell more, and squeeze more profit from each sale, despite problems ranging from a downgrade of the U.S. credit rating to an economic slowdown in China and Europe's never-ending debt crisis.

Still, there wasn't much immediate benefit for the shareholders. The S&P 500 ended the year unchanged from where it started. Including dividends, the index returned a slender 2 percent.

Shareholder activists, while glad that companies are moving a bigger portion of CEO pay into stock awards, caution that the rearranging isn't a cure-all.

For one thing, companies don't have to tie stock awards to performance. Instead, they can make the awards automatically payable on a certain date ? meaning all the CEO has to do is stick around.

Online Construction Network Offers Presentation on Social and Business Networking

Miami, FL (PRWEB) May 29, 2012 ? Construction Connection, the growing online educational and networking resource for the construction industry, and SCORE, a national nonprofit dedicated to the growth of small businesses, recently co-sponsored a chapter meeting for the American Society of Professional Estimators. The event featured networking time for fifty construction industry professionals as well as a special presentation by Suzanne Breistol, a founding partner of Construction Connection.

As the founder of a construction industry network with 35,000 members, Breistol offered expert advice through her seminar, ?Social and Business Networking ? Employment and Your Next Job or Next Hire?. Breistol?s presentation outlined how construction companies and individuals in the construction industry can successfully use the Internet as a tool for marketing, employment matching, and networking.

Les O?Bryan, Vice President of President of Pre-Construction Services with Coastal Construction, attended the ASPE meeting and appreciated the clear and practical information presented by Construction Connection. In the past eighteen months, his company has interviewed dozens of quality construction job candidates using the Construction Connection hiring system. O?Bryan expressed appreciation for Construction Connection?s specific approach to professions in the construction industry and their insight into online hiring.

Emill Noguera recently earned a Master?s degree in Construction Management from Florida International University and is a member of the newly formed ASPE student chapter. As a construction job seeker, Noguera was impressed with the helpful information and extensive resources that Construction Connection offers. As a part of the overall goal of connecting and providing resources for the entire construction industry community, Construction Connection seeks out opportunities to support a variety of construction organizations. Breistol commented on the ASPE meeting as a great success: ?Anytime we help people find the right construction job or assist small construction business owners in marketing more effectively and hire the best people, we have done our job.? Construction Connection will continue supporting small businesses by partnering with SCORE at another event in May and launching Consulting Simplified?, a strategic planning service for construction businesses. Kent Leighton, co-founder of Construction Connection, is using his 40 years of construction experience to lead the Consulting Simplified team in appraising, evaluating, rehabilitating, and nurturing small construction companies.

Construction Connection was created out of a need for a more effective and streamlined way for construction industry professionals to get matched with the right industry jobs and with the right opportunities. The partners of Construction Connection, both industry professionals themselves, listened to both company and individuals? dissatisfaction with the traditional job boards, the paid resume blasts, the overpriced resume services and overall lack of sympathy toward the individual candidate. We also listened to the dissatisfaction from companies who post jobs only to get many irrelevant results or having to purchase high priced ads to showcase their company. Construction Connection is a patent-pending, one-of-a-kind profile creating / match-making system. The system delivers effective results. Construction Connection saves you time, money and aggravation by matching people to people, people to companies, companies to people, and company to company.

Nicki Minaj Asks Fans To Vote For Next Roman Reloaded Singles

Young Money honey posted three different singles polls on her website on Thursday.

It's only been a little more than a week since Nicki Minaj dropped the clip for her Chris Brown collabo "Right by My Side," but everyone's favorite Harajuku Barbie is continuing her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded takeover and needs a little help in selecting her new singles. On Thursday night, Minaj's website revealed three polls with various options from the sophomore effort.

With Roman Reloaded crossing hip-hop and pop genres, Barbz and Kenz have quite a few Minaj stylings to select as their ideal singles. While the first race is between the more mellow pop cuts on the LP ("Marilyn Monroe," "Fire Burns," "Young Forever" and "Gun Shot"), the second battle includes tracks that bring out the rapper's harder alter ego Roman ("Champion," "HOV Lane" and "I Am Your Leader"). In the last poll, head Barbie has pitted three of her dance anthems against each other ("Pound the Alarm," "Whip It" and "Va Va Voom").

Shortly after the website posting, Minaj also took to Twitter to urge Team Minaj to sound off in the fun, writing, "Take the poll!!! And leave your comments. Gonna read them now." At press time, "Marilyn Monroe," "Champion" and "Va Va Voom" appeared to have the majority of votes.

Barbz and Kenz have plenty of reason to be excited, as they've been flooded with a string of new singles all year long. Even before the LP hit stores, they were treated to the frenetic "Stupid Hoe," which saw the Young Money honey taking a cluster of jabs at Lil' Kim.

Strategically releasing cuts to appease her growing fanbase, Minaj went on to the album's lead single, "Starships," a RedOne-produced number that was clearly catered to the Top 40 dance craze. And as predicted, the magic worked when the song peaked at #5 on Billboard's Hot 100. Soon after, the femcee balanced out the pop tune with the release of her ode to strippers, "Beez in the Trap." Most recently, Minaj released the visual for her Chris Brown-assisted R&B jam "Right by My Side," which also features a cameo love interest by none other than Nas.

Regardless of the poll winners, Minaj is already performing many of the cuts on her worldwide Pink Friday Tour, which will hit the States in July. Laurieann Gibson, who serves as the raptress' choreographer, spoke to MTV News recently about the trek, revealing that it's something she's "really, really proud of."

"I love [when] I heard Roman Reloaded. I loved her delivery. I love the way she flows," Gibson told MTV News. "So the Pink Friday Tour is really good and it's kind of like a glimpse back to what a real rap show is. It's intimate but big at the same time."

What do you want Nicki's next singles to be? Tell us your suggestions below.

Acer C120 Projector

While most micro-projector makers these days are trying to fit as many ports for different connectivity sources as possible into their products' tiny frames, Acer took the opposite tack with its C120 Projector ($299.99 list). This pico projector connects via USB?and USB alone?to a computer, emulating whatever's on your computer screen. In that respect it resembles some budget projectors we've seen such as the 15-lumen Ray LiteRay Lite ($159 direct, 3 stars), but the Acer is considerably brighter and easier to set up (though not necessarily to run).

The C120 is an LED-based DLP projector with a native WVGA resolution (854 by 480). Its rated brightness is 100 lumens, which puts it among the pocket projector elite. The only other 100-lumen pico projector we've reviewed is the Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector ($450 street, 3 stars).

The C120 is a handsome little projector, black (glossy on top) and rectangular with rounded corners. It fits in my pants pocket, but just barely. I weighed it on our postage scale at 6 ounces; adding the power adapter brought the total weight up to just 13 ounces. The focus wheel is on the side, next to the lens, which I find preferable to it being in front of the lens, at least for avoiding obstructing the light path with a stray finger. The wheel, though, is very small, and I found it hard to bring the image to a precise focus.

The Optoma PK320 provides a much broader range of connectivity choices, including HDMI, VGA, and composite video. It can also run presentations from internal memory, a micro-SD card, or a USB thumb drive.

Installation and Operation
The projector can be powered either through an AC adapter or over a computer's USB connection. It comes with a USB cable that plugs into the projector with a USB 3.0 connector. It's a Y cable with 2 USB B-type plugs for the computer, so you can run power and data over the cable. You do take a hit in brightness when you power the projector over the USB cable.

When you plug the C120 into a computer's USB port, the projector installs a driver on your system. You have to agree to the installation by clicking the appropriate button in a pop-up window, each time you use the projector. I used the projector with 3 laptops, and was able to run it on all three. However, for one of them I could only get it running some of the time, and wasn't able to determine why it didn't consistently work. Also, regardless of which laptop I used, the USB connection seemed finicky and the connection was occasionally lost. Unplugging and the re-plugging the cables in resolved this for the most part.

When I'd install the driver, it would resize the laptop's screen to 800 by 600 pixels, closer to the projector's native resolution. One can then resize the screen through the Windows Control Panel; the projector supports resolutions of up to 1,280 by 800 and did okay at that resolution, though the image looked better at the lower resolution.

Testing
The projector threw an image about 6 feet diagonal to fill our test screen from about 8 feet away. Although it looked okay in the dark, it was somewhat degraded with modest ambient light, so I did most of the testing with the image size about 4 feet diagonal.

I found the C120's image quality fine for internal business presentations (such as to small workgroups). You could use it for road presentations in a pinch, if you can verify that it will connect smoothly to your laptop via USB?for this projector, USB is the only game in town. Colors seemed reasonably true; there were hints of the rainbow effect common to DLP projectors in which bright areas against dark backgrounds may break up into little blue-green rainbows. Focus seemed slightly soft, and text wasn't very sharp. Video quality was okay for running short clips as part of a presentation.

A USB-only pico projector?and the C120 is unusually bright as such?offers the advantage of low price and?at least in theory?simple setup and operation. Downsides are that it's not as versatile as a full-featured model such as the Optoma PK320, and it's a one-trick pony?if you have problems connecting via USB, you don't have any other options. (If the C120's driver doesn't load, rebooting the laptop will sometimes resolve it?though you wouldn't want to have to do that when you're time pressed and presenting to a small group while on the road.) You don't want to misplace the USB Y-cable, as cables with USB 3.0 plugs aren't as easy to find as the earlier cables.

If USB connectivity is all you're looking for in a pico projector, the Acer C120 may well be your model of choice. It's considerably brighter than the Ray Lite and other USB-only projectors we've looked at, and less expensive than fuller featured models.

Chris Hemsworth Talks Thor 2 Villain

Chris Hemsworth Talks Thor 2

[UPDATE: Scroll Down to Find Out Which Actor Could be Playing the Villain in Thor 2.]

The glow of success is still shining bright around The Avengers?- but that doesn?t mean the cast of the film is getting any rest. Robert Downey Jr. is already into production on Iron Man 3 with writer/director Shane Black (Lethal Weapon), while Chris Hemsworth is already gearing up for Thor 2, this time under the guidance of?Game of Thrones director, Alan Taylor.

With the Iron Man and Thor sequels speeding down the pipeline, the superhero movie rumor mill is already churning with speculation and about what is coming in ?Phase 2? of Marvel?s Avengers?movie universe. While we know?Iron Man 3?will feature a story about a nanotechnological virus unleashed as a terrorist threat, Thor 2?has been something of a bigger question ? especially when it comes to the issue of the villain.

[WARNING!?AVENGERS?SPOILERS COMING!]

-

The Avengers?left off with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) being arrested by his brother Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and transported back to Asgard to face justice for attacking the Earth. Of course, one subplot of the Avengers?story was Loki?s partnership with an extraterrestrial ally ? one who warned him of the consequences he would face, should he fail to capture the Tesseract (cosmic cube). At the end of the film it was revealed that ally is classic Marvel Comics villain?Thanos, who has direct ties to the cosmic universe of Thor. With Loki having failed in his mission, some comic fans naturally assumed that Thor 2?would focus on Thanos attacking Asgard, looking for revenge against Loki and the tesseract, which is now assumedly stored in Odin?s vault (along with a few other?Marvel mystical artifacts of importance).

Thanos vs. Avengers Thor and Captain America

Thanos (with Infinity Gauntlet) vs. The Avengers

However, this is not the case according to Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth.

Talking to MTV, Hemsworth claims that Thanos is NOT the villain in Thor 2,?as far as he can see. Here?s how MTV described the exchange:

We already know that Natalie Portman will be returning to the project to reprise her role as Jane, but will we also see a return of?Thanos? We won?t because, according to Hemsworth, he would be ?too easy.?

?We need a bigger fish,? the Aussie said with a laugh.

UPDATE: It seems that ?bigger fish? could be Clash of the Titans and the Viking film?Valhalla Rising ?star Mads Mikkelsen, whom Variety reports is currently in talks with Marvel to play the villain role ? which we?re guessing is not?Thanos (though that wouldn?t be out of the realm (get it?) of possibility). American moviegoers probably recognize Mikkelsen best as the villain hammering James Bond?s gonads in Casino Royale; the actor has had bit parts in several big franchise films, including the aforementioned Titans, and Paul W.S. Anderson?s recent Three Musketeers remake. We?ll be sure to keep a close eye on the situation as a deal between Mikkelsen and Marvel gets worked out.

Thor 2 Mads Mikkelsen in Valhalla Rising

Mikkelsen in 'Valhalla Rising'

Hemsworth also described how Thor 2 is shaping up in general ? and what it?s like working with Taylor, one of the minds behind arguably the hottest show on TV right now:

?Alan Taylor is directing, and he?s one of the producers and directors of ?Game of Thrones.? I love that sort of mythical element, that there was an organic real world there, and I think Asgard and Thor?s ethereal universe could be injected with that,? Hemsworth said. ?It could be more sort of tangible. So more locations, less green screen. I think the Viking influence that that sort of world came from. It should feel [tangible]. It should exist more, instead of too shiny, clean, golden.?

(We know many fans will be in total support of that idea.)

?You?ve always got to tie in Earth, I think. But Thor in the comic books, I found, that after the initial kind of establishing the character got more interesting because there were so many realms and things to explore.?

Hemsworth?s sentiment in that last sentence echoes our own discussions on the Screen Rant Podcast about Avengers 2?-?namely, that the Marvel movie universe will split in two directions: one based on Earth (like Iron Man 3) and one that concerns the larger cosmic universe.? I think I speak for a fair number of fans when I say that if we DON?T see more of the cosmic realm in Thor 2, it will be something of a disappointment (because Natalie Portman?s Jane Foster is NOT an adequate?conciliation?prize).

Natalie Portman in second official Thor trailer

Do we really need more of THIS?

Of course, Hemsworth himself had to admit that he hasn?t seen the script for Thor 2?- by Don Payne (Thor) and Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan, Falling Skies) ? and neither have we, for that matter. Given the big success of The?Avengers?(and the surplus in money ? part of which has already been funneled into Iron Man 3), the Thunder God?s sequel is a picture that could ultimately take a different shape than initially expected.

Thor 2?will be in theaters on November 15, 2013.

Mitt Romney "Day One" Ads Preview Presidential Goals

Mitt Romney's "Day One" ads, outlining what he'd do in his first 24 hours on the job, sure make it sound like he'd be a good President of the United States.

But are they realistic?

Some things he promises in the TV spots, such as expediting the Keystone pipeline and ending Obamacare, he probably could do, or at least play a major role in.

Others, such as lifting job-killing regulations and lowering the unemployment rate, are more nebulous. It's easier to run for President than to be President.

Watch the ads below and see what the Republican's presidency would look like ... or at least how he envisions it in an idealized campaign commercial.

If they election were today, for whom would you vote?

Arianna Huffington: Sunday Roundup

This week, Facebook went public with the third largest IPO in history. On the downside of the ledger, Moody's downgraded more than three-dozen Spanish and Italian banks, and JPMorgan's trading losses zoomed past the original $2 billion estimate. On the political front, a pro-Romney super-PAC's plan to disentomb the Reverend Wright scandal made headlines. Some might question the wisdom of those backing a candidate who is an elder in a church known for magic underwear, baptizing dead people and a belief that Jesus visited America making religion a campaign issue -- but in a world where single-mom Bristol Palin shamelessly moralizes about the value of kids "growing up in a mother/father home," all bets are off. The controversy prompted Romney to deliver the quote of the week, saying of his stance on Reverend Wright: "I'm not familiar with precisely what I said, but I stand by what I said, whatever it was." 3 Offbeat Ways To Market Your Business Online | Online Business ...

?

With the advent of the internet and its thousands of benefits, business owners have taken to virtual marketing to promote their businesses. And why not, when it costs much less than offline advertising, it?s easy to use, and quite accessible to all? Not only is it available for various markets to see, its reach is global and unlimited.

Other than Facebook and Twitter ads, there are also other various ways to market your business online.

LinkedIn. Just by creating a LinkedIn group, you can generate an amazing number of leads from high-end decision makers. How would you react when you have successfully created a sales funnel than brought in approximately 50 to 100 fresh and highly targeted leads every day? Wouldn?t that assure your family of food on the table for the next few weeks?

The secret to using LinkedIn to market effectively are the following:

Add keywords in your description to increase ranking in LinkedIn?s search section

Add keywords in the title of the group, for easy searching via Google

Add your company website or blog to the LinkedIn group to drive traffic to your website

Add your blog RSS feed to the group so every new article is automatically posted to the home page of every group member.

Connect people in the group by making introductions to those who could potentially do business with one another.

All these guarantee that you will get more leads for your business. Just make sure you create a group that really targets your wanted market, in your niche. Be selective also so that you eliminate all unwanted and un-influential leads from your list/group.

Banner Advertising. Placing banner ads is still an effective way to market your business on the Internet, especially is you are aiming to promote your brand. Each impression is a visual presentation of your product or service. If you target placements of your banner ads campaigns well, they will be very effective in promoting your business.

Here are some tips when using banner advertising:

Do not blindly place ads. Practice careful selection in posting them, with your target audience in mind, so to avoid wastage of money and other resources.

After making a shortlist of sites where to place your ads, get prominent ad spots ? not some bottom space which merits little or no attention.

Make your ads stand out from the rest of your competition who are most likely selling similar products ? without irritating visitors with irritating colors or content which do not make sense.

Do some testing ? post different types of ads, and test each one for effectiveness. Test ad spots also, and see which works best. Once you?ve determined which ones are the best, then you?re off to creating your most effective banner ad campaigns!

Email blasts. An email blast is the process of contacting a huge number of potential clients through email. Very similar to direct mail, an email blast differs hugely with the fact that you may personalize each message you send out ? which is a huge thing in terms of building business relationships.

How does it work, first, you must have a list of recipients ready ? maybe gathered through referrals, database purchase (although not recommended because of the lack of controlled standards), or by gathering all the email addresses of former clients. Design a template, working the content so that it answers the need of the recipients.

Then merge the email body with the contact list ? and voila, your email blast is sent in one go.

How can email blasts be effective? First, you can send your potential clients regular updates and emails to promote your products or your brand. This can also be effective in increasing repeat sales from past customers. The point is, emails remind people of the existence of your business. The truth is, there are so many people out there who are wondering ?if you?re still in business,? so remind them that you are still there to fill in their need. Sending regular emails keeps you on top of mind recall ? allowing no or very little opportunity for your competition to creep up on a former client?s need and demand.

There are various ways to get your brand going virtually. Try any one of these techniques, and notice how marketing for the now generation is much more thorough and easier. No excuse for you not to succeed!

Caught in another 'question trap' on the job? ? Business ...

questionmark-in-mousetrapSarah spent the afternoon working on a quarterly report for her boss, only to hear this when she delivered it at day?s end: ?This isn?t a final version, is it? It won?t be a problem for you to work overtime today and fix this, will it??

Her boss just de??livered a question trap?a leading question to which the ?right? answer is agreement.

If Sarah gives the ?right? answer, she feels manipulated. Even if she doesn?t mind working overtime, she may resent the way she was asked. She may also feel that the wrong answer could upset her boss?and she may be right.

Here?s what to do with leading questions:

1.??Recognize them by their phrasing, such as ?don?t you think?? or ?can?t we?? Also learn to recognize how they make you feel or respond. Are you more or less likely to agree with someone who asks a leading question?

2.??See the question, not the person, as pushy. That perspective will help you handle the situation more constructively, instead of viewing others as domineering or closed-minded.

Next, you can reframe the person?s leading question in one of three ways:

1.??Focus on the opinion. For ex??ample, Sarah might have said, ?It sounds like you think I should make some additional changes to the document. Correct??

2.??Center on the question. Restate the question you were asked.

Example: ?You want to know whether I can stay late today to do some additional changes. Is that right??

3.??Concentrate on the person?s opinion and his question, to check your understanding.

Example: ?It sounds like you?d like for me to stay late today and finish up this document, and you?re wondering whether I can do that. Do I understand that right??

In some cases, you may want to go with tactic No. 3.

That way, you can focus the discussion on the person?s point of view, without feeling obligated to respond right away.

For example, imagine someone says, ?I think we?re rushing this de??cision, don?t you?? You can first focus on his opinion??It sounds like you think we?re rushing the decision??then ask him to clarify. ?Could you tell me why you think that??

In any case, the more you practice, the better you?ll get. And the more likely you?ll ?train? other people to avoid setting question traps in the first place.

Inside Syria rebel stronghold: 'The city is on mute'

NBC News

A United Nations convoy makes its way through Douma, Syria, on Tuesday.

?

By Charlene Gubash, NBC News

DOUMA, Syria -- Surrounded by ancient olive groves, Douma is just ten miles from Damascus but it feels like another world.?It is a city under occupation.?

In Damascus,?vehicles slow to a halt due to traffic jams. In Douma, there is no traffic. Only a few empty cars are parked on the roadside.?

Shoppers crowd the capital's sidewalks and restaurants do a brisk business. But in neighboring Douma, sidewalks are empty and most of the shops are shuttered with corrugated metal sheets or padlocked steel doors.?

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin answers Syria questions

A few people walk quickly down the empty streets on what must be only the most necessary of errands. They stare straight ahead or look down as they walk.?

Except for the noise of our three-vehicle convoy speeding through town, there is silence.?

ITV's Bill Neely reports from both sides of the frontlines in Syria. ?Each side accuses the other of the same crimes and neither is willing to stop fighting.

On Tuesday, we drove behind two vans of United Nations observers on a mission to Douma and Harasta to monitor the cease-fire.?

Both cities have been bastions of resistance against the regime where residents stage flash demonstrations even after months of brutal crackdowns.?

Report: Syria rebels get better weapons as US boosts support

However, there isn't much of a cease-fire left to monitor. Syria is wracked by mounting violence and the U.N. teams have been caught up in two explosions and a shooting.?

Opposition activists said the Syrian security forces have even opened fire on a funeral procession, killing at least 21 people. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

So it's no surprise they speed down the streets and get out of their vans only twice in violence-prone Douma.

Some residents seem worried that the U.N. presence will spur attacks. A man standing with his little daughter and son pulls the girl inside and yanks his unwilling and crying son behind the metal door of his house as we pass. He slams the door shut.

Our driver points out snipers in the tall building in front of us.?

Every few blocks we pass through military checkpoints, with armed troops behind sand-bagged barricades.

Little interaction
Led by a Moroccan, the U.N. monitors stop briefly at checkpoints to ask Syrian security if there has been any violence. A U.N. 'blue cap' shakes hands with a tiny child in a car stopped at a checkpoint. Otherwise, we do not see the U.N. interact with or talk to civilians.

They get out of their vans at a main checkpoint and the team leader waves us away as he goes to talk with a plainclothes officer in private. As we wait, police, soldiers and plainclothes security look nervously around.?

Fifty-five people were killed and 372 were wounded when two cars exploded in Damascus, Syria earlier on Thursday. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

A soldier explains why they are on edge. "They shoot at us from here and there," he says as he points to neighboring buildings.

He claims the opposition still manages to evade the tight security cordon to spirit in weapons and ammunition. But the military shoots back.?

Syria violence spills into streets of Lebanon's Tripoli

According to activists, a civilian was killed in Douma the day we visited and YouTube video which NBC News cannot verify later showed snipers shooting randomly at the city's streets.??????

We cross into Harasta, a much livelier town. It is market day. A few shoppers check out vegetables heaped on trays.?

We jostle for position with other cars. Some stores are open and a few shoppers buy bread from a functioning bakery.

Oddly, the town is still silent. There is no chatter or laughter as people go about their business.?

It is as if the city is on mute.?

We pass back through the tense quiet of Douma on our way to the main highway to Damascus.?

We are rejoined by a car full of Syrian intelligence and three carloads of journalists from pro-regime Syrian TV and Al Dunya TV who accompanied us to Douma. They had elected to wait outside the city, unwilling to risk the anger of local residents.?

Our visit, however fleeting, revealed a part of Syria normally seen only in grainy activist video.

'Superflares' from stars counted

Nasa's Kepler space telescope has provided fresh insight on the colossal explosions that can afflict some stars.

These enormous releases of magnetic energy - known as superflares - could damage the atmosphere of a nearby orbiting planet, putting at risk any lifeforms that might reside there.

Fortunately, Kepler shows superflares to be much less frequent on slow-rotating stars like our Sun.

The new observations are reported in the journal Nature.

The biggest recorded flare on the Sun was probably the "Carrington event" of 1 September 1859.

Described by the English astronomer Richard Carrington, this outburst sent a surge of electromagnetic radiation and charged particles towards the Earth.

The magnetic fields embedded in the bubble of matter buffeted the Earth's own magnetic field, producing spectacular auroral lights. Electric fields generated in telegraph wires disrupted communications.

Remarkably, a Carrington flare is puny compared to some of the events witnessed by Kepler. These superflares can be 10,000 times more energetic.

The US space agency telescope is currently staring at 100,000 stars in a patch of sky about 600 to 3,000 light-years from Earth.

It is looking for tell-tale dips in light that might indicate orbiting planets have just moved across the face of those stars. But in making those observations, Kepler is also gathering information on the sudden brightening that might be associated with flares.

Hiroyuki Maehara from Kyoto University, Japan, and colleagues have now reviewed the data to compile the best statistics yet on the frequency and size of superflares.

Kepler saw a total of 365 superflares during an observation period lasting 120 days.

The numbers confirm that very few (only 0.2%) Sun-like stars experience monster flares.

That may be explained by current models which indicate superflares could be caused by magnetic interactions with closely orbiting giant planets - not something we see in our Solar System, where the largest worlds, Jupiter and Saturn, circle far away from the Sun.

But, this is a situation seen in some distant planetary systems where worlds even bigger than our gas giants orbit extremely close to their host stars.

One other interesting observation Kepler makes is that the stars which have superflares display extremely large starspots.

These are regions of the star's surface that are relatively cooler than the typical surface temperatures around them.

Carrington famously sketched the spot group on the Sun associated with his big flare, but according to Kepler this group would be dwarfed by the sort of spots on a superflare star.

Scientists have long speculated about the impact of a superflare on our Sun might have on Earth. The expectation is that it would strip away the ozone layer, leading to increased radiation at ground level. Widespread extinctions could result.

There is a flip side to this, however. In some distant planetary systems, superflares might actually be life-enabling by providing sufficient energy in the atmospheres of these worlds to initiate the chemistry necessary for biology to get going.

Source: HP Layoffs Are Going To Be Huge - Business Insider

It's no secret that HP is considering layoffs and soon.

Meg Whitman has even publicly hinted at them. Question is, how many employees will be axed?

One source at HP claims the job cuts are going to be massive.

While this is just one source, we know that tension inside the company is running high and so is the rumor mill.

Here's what our source told us:

 • Layoffs are going to be significant. At least, they'll be bigger than what Whitman has said so far. She's said that layoffs would NOT be "broad-based" at least in China (whatever that means), but she didn't say anything about the rest of the worldwide workforce.
 • Our source said HP wants to trim its workforce by 10%-15%. Given that HP has 320,000 employees, a 10% reduction would be 32,000 workers gone. However, that would include an early retirement program. We'd guess that this would include attrition, too, where new hires don't come in when employees leave. That number sounds high and we don't expect HP to promise it next week, because HP will also want to shift some jobs offshore. So, HP's total workforce numbers won't reflect all of the cuts.
 • We're hearing that manufacturing staff won't be hit as hard as others. That makes sense to us given that HP is more of a product company than a software or services company.
 • Speaking of services, keep an eye out for HP Services results, which one insider said is expected to have another abysmal quarter. HP's outsourcing units could be particularly hit hard with whatever layoffs come and many of their jobs moved offshore. We're hearing that people with 8-10 years of experience?or are at the top of the salary charts -- are the most vulnerable.

We'll find out in one week what HP is officially planning on doing. Given Whitman's constant speeches about HP needing time, we might also hear that HP is not going to rip the bandage off in one fell swoop, but will do one modest layoff in 2012, shift more work to offshore workers, and trim the workforce more over time.

HP had no comment.
